D-DAY

D-day, also known as the Battle of Normandy, signified a major turning point in World War II. It took place on June 6, 1944. At 6:30 AM, the largest seaborne attack in history began on the coast of France. The massive undertaking involved:

over 150,000 American, Canadian, and British troops

nearly 6,000 ships and landing craft

50 miles of heavily fortified coastline

And at Omaha Beach, the worst area of fighting, soldiers had to cross 200 yards of exposed beach before they could take cover.

D-day changed the course of the war. Despite 4,413 recorded Allied deaths on that day alone, the Allied troops were victorious in breaking through the German defenses and pushing through to the rest of France. They liberated Paris 81 days later. However, it was another year before Germany officially and unconditionally surrendered. Today a 172.5-acre American cemetery overlooks Omaha Beach and the English Channel. Over 9,000 American military personnel are buried there, including 41 sets of brothers and 3 American women.
